A research group from a Spanish university has developed an identification system consisting of a passive card, without its own power supply, which is connected when it receives light originating from a beacon, for subsequently sending an identification code to a receiver for deciphering it. The research group is looking for licensing the patent.

The technology is an identification system using a remotely light powered coded card consisting of a passive card which is connected when it receives light originating from a beacon, for subsequently sending an identification code to a receiver for deciphering it and then acting accordingly depending on the application given to the system: allowing or not the access, identifying a person or an object, sending a signal that determines the position of the identified object, etc.

Therefore, the systems simplified structure consists of a beacon and a card. The beacon consists of a light transmitter, a code receiver, a decoder and an actuator. The card consists of a light to electricity receiver-converter, an encoding step and a code transmitter.

The systems overall functioning is the following: user carrying the card approaches the beacon in charge of identify it. Then, the card receives light coming from the beacon and, by means of the receiver-converter, directly turns light into electricity. The generated electricity powers the circuit encoder that sends an order for the transmitter to launch a coded signal. The beacon detects the signal through its receiver that sends it to the decoder, which interprets the signal and compares it with the access codes. In case the comparison is positive, it sends an order to the actuator which acts accordingly depending on the application.

There are multiple applications glimpsed for this system, from the simple identification of people or objects, to the identification for access control or the determination of objects position.

This systems main target is to ensure that the user does not have to participate actively in its identification, thus increasing its comfort, reducing costs and avoiding inappropriate situations arising when using current identification systems powered with batteries because of batterys depletion.

Aspects innovants


Tha main innovative aspects are:
" This new identification system incorporates a card that requires neither batteries nor any other method for energy storage but is done by direct transference of light power.
" Light activating the card is not visible by human eye and it does not come from the beacon making up this system.
" All the elements making up the card (or some of them) are incorporated in a more global piece or device that uses the process of transmitting the energy it needs as light.
" The object receiving the code is a mobile one and the part powered with light and sending the code is a fixed one.

The main advantage of this new identification system is that the user does not have to actively participate nor does he have to be aware of its maintenance, thus reducing costs (not having to replace the battery anymore) and avoiding the possible inopportunity arising if the battery exhausts when its functioning is required.
Another important advantage of this identification system is the small size of the card thereof.
Thus, the user only has to worry about carrying the card in a place accessible by light, hung from the lapel, in a pocket, outside of a vehicle, etc.
