Résumé

A Spanish research group has developed a biometric personal identification system through iris pattern analysis, with outstanding results both in classification and verification, which make it suitable for its application in building access control and high security environments which require user identification. The research group would be interested in licensing the patent to companies from the security sector.

Description complète

A Spanish research group has developed a biometric system which allows the identification of users by means of the human iris pattern or iris signature code, reaching, in less computing time, quantitative results that are competitive against those obtained by using existing systems, both in each user recognition (or classification) and authentication (or verification).

The identification system consists of four steps: the first one is the eye image capture, the second one is its preprocessing and setting-up of the iris signature, the third one the extraction of its characteristics and determination of the iris signature code, and the fourth one the comparison and decision making, oriented to either the classification (in case the system is used as user recognition) or the verification (in case it is implemented as authentication system).

This system, in its extraction of characteristics step, uses a one-dimensional signal (or sequence) of 256 points, called iris signature, thus reducing time spent on user identification/authentication. In the same step, the system uses the multiresolution analysis of a one-dimensional signal and makes up a zero crossing plot of the discrete dyadic wavelet transform from it by only considering the optimum resolution levels, thus contributing to computing cost and time reductions in this step and, therefore, to system performance improvement, both in case the system is implemented as user identifier and in case it is implemented as authenticator.

In the comparison step, the iris pattern obtained consists of 256 bits per each resolution level employed, a size much smaller than the iris pattern used by prior art systems, and makes it suitable for its inclusion in a device with little storage capacity, such as, for example, an smart card.

Aspects innovants

The novelty of this system is in the algorithm used to analyze the characteristics extracted from the iris and determine the iris signature code.

This system, in its extraction of characteristics step:
" uses a one-dimensional signal (or sequence) of 256 points
" uses the multiresolution analysis of an unidimensional signal and makes up a zero crossing plot of the discrete dyadic wavelet transform from it by only considering the optimum resolution levels.
This system, in the comparison step, obtains an iris pattern consisting of 256 bits per each resolution level employed, a size much smaller than the iris pattern used by prior art systems.

The main advantage is that this new biometric identification system achieves a reduction, compared to current systems, in computing cost and times, both in the recognition and in the authentication of each user, thus contributing to the system performance improvement itself.

The iris pattern obtained with this system has much smaller size than the iris pattern used by prior art systems, which makes it suitable for its inclusion in a device with little storage capacity, such as, for example, a smart card.
