A Spanish research group has developed a people identity verification system by portable information support based on voice recognition. This identity verification system only has to draw the parameters of the person who speaks in front of the microphone and compare these parameters with the ones stored in the portable information support, then taking the decisions that have been programmed. The research group is looking for licensing the patent.

A Spanish research group has developed a people identity verification system by portable information support based on voice recognition. The main characteristic of this system is that each person is provided with a portable information support (smart card) in which his voices characteristic parameters are recorded.

The developed system consists of two subsystems: the card issuing one and the identity verification one. The first one allows the holders voice to be recorded and obtain the parameters that characterize it, then passing them to his personal card. The second one extracts the voice parameters of the cardholder who speaks to the systems microphone, and compares them with the information within the card. As a result of this comparison, it is obtained if the person who speaks and the card matches or not, taking in both cases the relevant actions which have been programmed.

This system can support any portable information mean carried by the user, both electric and magnetic or optical (or any combination thereof). However, systems development has been focused on smart card because of its potential multiapplication, which makes it extremely versatile to support other applications, and the high security degree of data contained therein.
By using this system it is possible to reduce costs in terminals, and to simplify systems maintenance, reducing at the same time its associated costs.

Aspects innovants

The main novelty of this people identity verification system based on voice recognition compared to current systems (based on computers wherein data related to the various users who have access to the system are stored) is that each user carries the information about his voice in a portable information storage mean (smart card) and that identity verification systems only have to compare these parameters with those it extracts from the user when this one speaks.

The fact that each user carries the information about his voice within a portable information storage mean (smart card) instead of being these information stored in a computer involves a cost reduction in terminals, mainly for applications that require a great number of these elements, such as access control (thus getting rid of the need of having a computer for each one). Using smart cards provides the system with the possibility of multiapplication, a great versatility to support other applications and a high security degree of data therein.

Moreover, the systems maintenance is simplified (avoiding the insertion in each computer of each users parameters and the periodical maintenance thereof) reducing at the same time costs associated to this maintenance.
This system uses equal identity verification subsystems (which allows massive fabrication thereof) further contributing to cost reduction, and the storage and computing capacity of these subsystems are lower.
