Résumé
A Spanish research group has developed a continuous- wave radar system that uses a switch to share the antenna between receiver and transmitter, following some control signals with variable frequency. Switching generates undesired harmonics that can be removed using a digital signal processing algorithm consisting of an apodization and a minimization. The research group is looking for licensing the patent.
Description complète
The technique known as Frequency Modulation and Interrupted Continuous Wave (FMICW) uses a switching system that exchanges the antenna between transmission and reception, several times per transmitted frequency ramp. This technique has problems of range coverage. The proposed system solves the problem of range coverage switching each ramp with a square control signal of different frequency. This switching generates undesired harmonics around each target that are located at different frequencies for each ramp. Taking advantage of this fact, it has been developed an algorithm that combines apodization and minimization on a set of signals to eliminate these harmonics. Achieved results are equivalent to a system with two antennas.
The use of FMICW switching techniques to operate the radar with a single antenna was limited to very short distances when transmitted bandwidth was high. However, this technology extends the technique to FMICW systems with moderate range and high resolution.
Aspects innovants
The novelty is to combine moderate range and high resolution using only a single antenna in FMCW radars. So far, the systems with an antenna used RPCs technique for long-range, but they are only valid for moderate resolution.
Reducing weight and space of the radar allows the miniaturization of these systems. Furthermore, saving an antenna, which is an expensive element, produces a substantial cost reduction.
